Position Summary Role Overview We are hiring a Database Administrator to plan and execute the SQL Server side of a multi-wave data center migration to Microsoft Azure, for a US healthcare payer. You will move business-critical databases to Azure with minimal downtime and no data loss, and prove their integrity and performance afterward. Many of the client's databases sit on shared SQL Server instances, so migration waves are grouped by instance as well as by application. Databases are copied to Azure ahead of time and kept in sync, then cut over when each application is ready, using native backup and restore or log shipping depending on size and outage window. The target platform is SQL Server on Azure VMs, with Azure SQL Managed Instance considered where it fits. The program is also moving identity from on-premises Active Directory to Entra ID, which affects SQL service accounts, SQL Agent, Reporting Services, and Kerberos-based connections. You will help work through those changes, all within HIPAA and HITECH requirements for member and claims data.
Key Responsibilities
Discovery and migration planning Inventory and assess the SQL Server estate: instances, databases, sizes, versions, dependencies, SQL Agent jobs, linked servers, and SSIS and SSRS usage. Group migration waves by shared instance, validate dependencies with application teams, and recommend when a database should move off a shared instance. Choose the migration method for each database based on size and outage window: backup and restore at cutover, native log shipping, or Azure Database Migration Service. Confirm application compatibility with the target SQL Server version. Migration execution Build target SQL Server environments on Azure VMs, or Azure SQL Managed Instance where chosen, to the agreed standards for storage, configuration, and security. Seed, synchronize, and cut over databases, starting with an end-to-end pilot on low-risk servers. Validate data integrity after migration (row counts, checksums, referential integrity), along with logins, jobs, and linked servers. Take part in cutover nights, rollback rehearsals, and hypercare. Performance and latency Baseline database performance before migration and compare after; tune queries, indexes, and resource settings. Test application-to-database latency where an application stays on premises while its database moves to Azure, and recommend sequence changes if needed. Advise on database sizing and licensing to control Azure cost. Backup, recovery, and resiliency Design the Azure backup approach to meet agreed RPO and RTO targets, and test restores regularly. Plan the move from third-party backup tooling to the chosen Azure backup solution, keeping historical backups restorable. Configure high availability and disaster recovery, such as Always On availability groups or log shipping, and support DR tests. Security and compliance Apply encryption at rest and in transit, access controls, and auditing. Replace Active Directory service accounts and Kerberos-dependent configuration with approaches that work under Entra ID. Protect member and claims data under HIPAA and HITECH, and support audits and vulnerability remediation. Automation, documentation, and collaboration Automate database tasks with PowerShell, T-SQL, and Azure CLI. Maintain database runbooks, migration records, and architecture documentation. Work closely with the client's DBA team, who own source-side changes, and with application, infrastructure, and project teams.
Qualifications
Required 8+ years as a Database Administrator in enterprise environments, with deep Microsoft SQL Server administration. Hands-on data center to Azure database migrations, including at least one production cutover. SQL Server on Azure VMs, and Azure SQL Managed Instance or Azure SQL Database. Backup and restore, log shipping, and Always On availability groups. Post-migration data validation and performance tuning. Scripting with PowerShell and T-SQL. Experience in healthcare, working under HIPAA. Preferred Health plan or payer systems, such as claims, enrollment, or data warehouses. Consolidating or splitting shared SQL Server instances. Azure Database Migration Service and Data Migration Assistant. Third-party backup tools such as LiteSpeed or Cohesity. SSIS and SSRS, and SQL Server with Entra ID authentication. Oracle, PostgreSQL, or MySQL. The dbatools PowerShell module.
