[Remote] Engineering Manager
Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. The employer is a Series C fintech startup whose platform streamlines the mortgage loan process through AI-powered document management, automated task lists, and configurable business rules. The Engineering Manager will lead a pod of 6–8 engineers building an AI-native Loan Origination System, oversee execution and people management, contribute code, and partner with Product and Technical Leads on delivery and architecture.
Responsibilities
- Managing a pod of ~6–8 engineers — running 1:1s, giving continuous feedback, handling hiring/firing, PIPs, and career growth
- Owning your pod's execution cadence: planning, retros, delivery health, and surfacing risk early
- Continuing to code ~10–20% of your time — shipping 1–2 PRs per week to stay close to the engineering experience
- Partnering with Product Managers and Technical Leads on prioritization, architecture decisions, and cross-functional alignment
- Onboarding new engineers effectively and keeping documentation and ownership boundaries sharp
Skills
- Has actually managed (not just led) 5+ engineers with real people management experience — hiring, firing, PIPs, performance reviews
- Hands-on TypeScript experience — must be able to pass a live coding interview in TypeScript (no language substitutes)
- Progressive engineering career trajectory (SWE → Senior → Staff/Management)
- AI-forward mindset — comfortable using AI tools in engineering workflows and expects their team to as well
- Experience as a middle manager (not a tech lead) managing a single pod of 5+ direct reports (hiring, firing, performance management)
- Experience shipping production software and actively coding in a current or recent engineering manager role
- Experience hand coding in TypeScript and willingness to pass a hands- on coding interview
- 8+ years of experience as a software engineer or engineering manager
- Experience using AI tools in engineering workflows and familiarity with modern AI product development (evals, experiment design, dataset curation)
- Progressive career path from software engineer to staff engineer to management
- Significant backend engineering experience
- Startup or small-company experience preferred
