[Remote] Java Backend Engineer

Cognizant is a technology and engineering company seeking a Senior Java Backend Engineer to build and support scalable, cloud-native enterprise applications. The role involves developing Java-based backend solutions, optimizing databases, supporting event-driven architectures, deploying applications to cloud platforms, and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop enterprise applications using Java, Spring Boot, and Microservices architecture
- Build and support event-driven solutions using Apache Kafka
- Optimize database performance using Hibernate/JPA and advanced SQL
- Troubleshoot production issues and implement sustainable solutions
- Deploy and support applications on Azure, AWS, or GCP using Docker and Kubernetes
- Collaborate with business and technical teams to deliver scalable solutions
- Leverage AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot to improve productivity and code quality
Skills

- Minimum 8 years of IT experience with strong hands-on expertise in Java (11/17/21), Spring Boot, and Microservices
- Experience designing and building large-scale, high-performance distributed applications
- Strong experience with Apache Kafka and event-driven architectures
- Expertise in Hibernate/JPA, data modeling, advanced SQL, and database tuning
- Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP
- Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines
- Strong problem-solving, debugging, communication, and stakeholder management skills
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
- Experience using GitHub Copilot or other AI-assisted development tools
- Experience working in cloud-native and containerized enterprise environments
- Knowledge of application performance monitoring and observability tools
