[Remote] Lead Data Engineer
Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Harnham is seeking a Lead Data Engineer to provide hands-on technical leadership across data engineering, architecture, and data platform development. The role focuses on designing scalable data solutions, leading complex initiatives from architecture through deployment, mentoring engineers, and managing a small Data Engineering team.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain scalable ELT pipelines and data solutions
- Lead data architecture, modeling, engineering standards, and best practices
- Own data transformations and onboarding of new customer data sources
- Troubleshoot complex customer-facing data issues
- Improve existing systems through automation, scalability, reliability, and efficiency
- Lead projects from architecture and planning through deployment and ongoing support
- Evaluate technical options, communicate tradeoffs, and make recommendations
- Mentor engineers and contribute to the technical roadmap
- Manage and lead a small team of Data Engineers, supporting their development and performance
Skills
- 7–10+ years of experience, including 5+ years in Data Engineering
- Strong SQL and Python skills
- Deep experience with ELT, data pipelines, and large-scale data ingestion
- Strong data modeling and architecture experience
- Experience with Airflow or similar orchestration tools
- Experience working with large datasets and varying data quality
- Strong architectural mindset with the ability to make independent technical decisions
- Experience improving or evolving existing data platforms
- Previous experience managing a small Data Engineering team is required
- Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills
- Experience providing technical leadership and mentoring engineers
- Nice to have: dbt, PostgreSQL, MPP databases, Astronomer/Dagster, healthcare data, and experience across multiple database technologies
