[Remote] Mechanical Engineer
Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Switch designs, builds, and operates advanced digital infrastructure and data centers. The Mechanical Engineer will design and support mechanical and piping systems for large-scale data center projects, owning work from concept through construction while ensuring performance, cost, quality, and code compliance. The role also coordinates with consultants, vendors, utilities, authorities having jurisdiction, and construction partners across multiple active projects.
Responsibilities
- Design mechanical and piping systems for hyperscale data center projects
- Review and guide work from external engineering consultants
- Develop and maintain design standards, specifications, and basis of design documents
- Select and evaluate mechanical equipment with vendors and manufacturers
- Ensure designs meet mechanical and plumbing codes, standards, and utility requirements
- Coordinate with internal teams, utilities, AHJs, and construction partners
- Support projects through design reviews, permitting, and construction phases
- Conduct site visits for assessments, design validation, and construction support
- Identify improvements to cost, quality, schedule, and design consistency across projects
Skills
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field
- 4–7 years of experience designing mechanical systems for large-scale facilities
- Experience with cooling systems and mechanical infrastructure in data centers or similar environments
- Working knowledge of mechanical and plumbing codes and standards
- Experience coordinating with external design consultants
- Familiarity with tools such as Bluebeam, Excel, Smartsheet, MS Office, or similar
- Ability to review technical designs and support construction execution
- Remote applicants must reside in one of our registered states: AL, AZ, CA, CO, GA, IL, LA, MA, MI, MO, NC, NV, NY, OR, TX, UT, VA, WA
- Professional Engineer (PE) license
- Experience with CFD or FEA tools for airflow and system analysis
- Experience working with AHJs, utilities, and permitting processes
