[Remote] Software Engineering Manager

Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Point of Rental Software is a global rental software company. The Software Engineering Manager will lead the team responsible for the company-wide API, payments platform, job costing, and AR communication micro-apps, while remaining hands-on in development. The role includes engineering leadership, architecture, incident response, PCI compliance, cloud operations, AI-driven development practices, and cross-team platform alignment.

Responsibilities

• Own the Global API and unified platform, keeping the core infrastructure behind all our products reliable and well-documented
• Own the architecture of PORPay, our payments platform - processor integrations, plus the Job Costing and AR Communicator micro-apps built on top of it
• Lead and mentor a team of engineers, balancing technical guidance with day-to-day people management
• Stay hands-on in the codebase. This is not a pure-oversight role - you ship real code
• Own architectural review and design quality, including pull requests and in-flight designs
• Lead incident response and root-cause analysis for payments and API issues. These are revenue-critical services
• Drive the PCI compliance roadmap, plus AWS cost and observability for the platform
• Make agentic AI development tools part of how the team works daily, building reusable skills, sub-agents, and workflows instead of one-off prompting
• Keep cross-team dependencies visible through clear technical documentation: ERDs, swim-lane diagrams, and API flow docs
• Partner with engineering and product leadership across every product line to keep the Global API roadmap aligned with real needs
• Run technical evaluations of vendors and new payment processor integrations, and prepare decision material for leadership: options, effort, recommendations
• Estimate realistically, flag risk early, and deliver end to end with proactive status updates
• Support disaster recovery planning and technical due diligence across teams

Skills

• 8+ years of professional software development experience, ideally including ownership of a shared API, integration layer, or platform used by multiple products or teams
• Strong, proactive communication skills. This role sits between multiple teams and requires someone engaged and clear in conversation
• Experience with agentic AI coding tools, and genuine enthusiasm for pushing them further
• Proven experience managing or leading software engineers while staying hands-on technically, and readiness to step into people management from day one
• Extensive experience with an RDBMS (MySQL, Postgres, Oracle, or similar), including comfort designing and revising ERDs on the spot
• Strong full-stack experience: back-end (Node, Python, .NET, PHP, or similar) and front-end SPA framework (Angular, Vue, React, or similar)
• Experience designing and operating cloud services (AWS preferred), including ownership of cost and observability
• Experience with payments systems or PCI compliance
• CS/Math/Computer Engineering degree, or equivalent experience
